Bazylika Mariacka

Roman Catholic basilica with a carved altar and Gothic tower from which a trumpeter plays the bugle call every hour

Mariacki Church is one of Poland's most recognisable monuments. It is located in the centre of the city - on Cracovian Market Square at the entrance to Florianska Street. It is a Gothic church, the construction of which dates back to the turn of the 14th/15th century on the foundations of the Romanesque church previously located there. At the end of the 14th century, the church took on the form of a basilica. The most distinctive features of the building are the two towers on the façade of the church. The taller tower, known as the Hejnalica, is 82 metres high, while the lower one measures 69 metres and serves as the church's bell tower. A well-known accent of Mariacki Basilica is its altarpiece by Wit Stwosz. This magnificent masterpiece of late Gothic sculptural art was completed in 1489 and is still admired by tourists from all over the world
